Barefoot in Asian culture

Image
by sharleen wl  so there have been like a number of discussions in the reddit barefoot sub about going barefoot and the asian culture. some of the popular questions have been like 'why don't you see very many asians go barefoot in public?' and 'what is it like to go barefoot in asia (or name a specific country)?' or 'i'm planning to go to (a specific asian country) and wanna know if i should go barefoot in public there.' as an asian girl i find this topic interesting. so lets talk about it a little. barefoot asian girl with filthy feet across many asian cultures, going barefoot is far more than a matter of comfort - it's a gesture rich with cultural meaning, spiritual symbolism, and centuries-old tradition.  going barefoot as a sign of respect   in countries like japan, korea, india, thailand, and much of southeast asia, removing one’s shoes before entering a home is a deeply ingrained custom. bare feet - or feet in socks or house slippers - are seen...

Going barefoot is gross

Image
by sharleen wl 'going barefoot is gross!' that's what i often hear from people when they first learn about my barefoot lifestyle or see me walking around in dirty bare feet. i don't only hear this from strangers but even some of my friends say it on occasion. in the beginning i would be embarrassed and would be somewhat reluctant to go barefoot in public. but at this point i no longer care. in fact i wear it as a badge of honor. i'm a free spirit, i live life the way i like it and don't worry about what other people say. gotta admit, personal hygiene isn't always my top priority (you may have already known this from many of my posts haha!). so i may be gross but i'm healthy and i live a fun and happy life and to me that's all that matters. so for fun i decided to experiment with ai. the following was written by chat gpt. ya, you can tell it wasn't written by me cuz the grammer and spelling are perfect lol. but don't worry it won't replac...

Fun barefoot day around town

Image
barefoot staycation day 2 by sharleen wl it's monday morning, the second day of my barefoot staycation. rays of sunlight filters through my bedroom window and the birds are chirping outside. i stretch my arms and legs, feeling the cool breeze that comes in from the open window. ya, like many dwelling places in hawaii my apartment isn't air-conditioned. we don't need it that much cuz the trade wind blows almost constantly. occasionally it stops blowing and the air becomes sticky but that's only like a couple of weeks in a year. i look at my dirty soles and giggle as they're a sign of living a fun and free barefoot lifestyle. yesterday was quite enjoyable and today more exciting adventures await. but...there's something i need to do before i even start the day. last night i was too tired and this morning i feel a strong urge to do it. noo, i'm not talking about washing the dishes 🤣. hint - not wearing anything in bed really makes it easy 😉 ok no...

Barefoot staycation

Image
by sharleen wl i recently took a week's vacation. it was a staycation to be exact because well, i live in hawaii. people come here for vacation so why should i go anywhere else? lol. that meant it was going to be a full week being completely barefoot. as i previously mentioned, my current job as a cashier at a restaurant doesn't allow me to be barefoot at work. i can wear flip flops (or rubber slippers as they call them here) which is cool as i despise closed shoes but still, it ain't the same as being barefoot. if you've been following my blog for a while you know that i'm a rebellious barefoot girl who refuses to wear shoes no matter the weather or occasion. i just love the feeling of the earth beneath my feet and the freedom that comes with being shoeless. so a whole day spent in bare feet is always an adventure. it never gets old. i usually have sunday and monday off which i always look forward to and now i'll literally be barefoot 24/7. it'll be a magic...

Why do you go barefoot?

Image
by sharleen wl a while ago someone asked a question on the reddit barefoot sub: "why do you go barefoot?" the following was my answer: "i love the feeling of walking barefoot on different surfaces. from soft dirt and mud squishing between my toes to grass covered in morning dew to the cool floors of a supermarket on a warm summer day. it also allows me to better connect with nature and the world around me. going barefoot also gives me the sense of freedom of not having my feet cooped up in restrictive socks and shoes which make them hot and sweaty. ngl, in my case there's also the rebellious factor. i'm a free spirit who enjoys breaking norms, and going barefoot and getting my feet all dirty is one way to do it." now let me elaborate on this a little. my love for going barefoot began when i was just a toddler and refused to keep my shoes on no matter how hard my parents (especially my mom) tried which drove them nuts. i would often get yelled at and sometime...

Barefoot in Seattle

Image
by sharleen wl I had previously heard that Seattle was a barefoot friendly city, so I was excited when I had the chance to prove it for myself early last summer. My girlfriend Sandra and I were going a cruise to Alaska leaving from Seattle. As you know from one of my previous posts ( barefoot thanksgiving break ) I'm bi, and Sandra who was my childhood best friend, is lesbian. Anyway, we were planning to stay in Seattle for a day before the cruise, and we already booked a hotel. It was a quaint little waterfront hotel, and we were lucky to get an ocean view so that we could watch ships pass by. Sandra has relatives in Seattle whom she wanted to spend some time with, so she flew in a day earlier. After being denied boarding barefoot on my trip to Houston the year before ( barefoot thanksgiving break ), I didn't bother trying it this time. I just put on flip flops to board, and took them off again once I was on the plane. I deplaned in Seattle and walked around the airport ...

Barefoot Thanksgiving break

Image
by Sharleen (Lynn) WL Last year over Thanksgiving break I visited my best friend Sandra (who is also my girlfriend now) in Houston where she goes to school. Yeah, I'm bi and she's lesbian, so after I broke up with my last boyfriend, Sandra and I developed a romantic relationship. Its been great cuz we both have alot of things in common including the love of going barefoot. What kinda sucks is she had to move to Houston. Anyway, I flew to Houston a couple days before Thanksgiving. I was planning to do it entirely barefoot like I did when I was a kid (you can read the story here on the blog if you haven't already - its titled "Traveling Barefoot"), but unfortunately at the gate I was told to put shoes on. So I just wore my flip flops which I put in my backpack. The staff was nice about it though, he just looked at me and smiled. Once I got on the plane I took 'em off again. I walked out of the plane barefoot in Houston, and no one said anything. Sandra pic...

Going barefoot is legal

Image
Going barefoot is legal, safe, and fun. Is going barefoot legal? At home, who cares, right? But what about out in public? Many people wonder, and are frequently given the wrong answer. Unfortunately in this day and age, especially in the US and a few other countries, some people still believe that going barefoot in public is illegal, especially being barefoot in establishments like stores, restaurants, etc. Barefooters often get kicked out and told that they need to put on shoes or at the very least people stare at them like their from a different planet or even mentally unstable. This can be unnerving to newbie barefooters. Some are afraid to even try. Many people also believe that driving barefoot is illegal. Well, the good news is, none of that is true. Feet, just like hands, are not private parts, so its ok to expose them. Nobody requires you to wear gloves, right? Problem is, beliefs are hard to change, especially if they have been around for decades. But with the inte...

I Have A Dream (The Barefoot Edition)

Image
If you have gone barefoot in stores or other establishments on a regular basis (especially in the United States which is known as the land of the free ), most likely you have experienced some form of discrimination ranging from the mildest (like getting dirty looks) to the harshest (like being yelled at, kicked out, or in very rare cases, even arrested). Ideally, barefooters should never be discriminated against as we don't break any law or hurt anyone by going barefoot. It's totally a personal choice, and we should be allowed the freedom to live the lifestyle that we love. This wish is wonderfully expressed in the following short article. I Have A Dream (The Barefoot Edition) by Steve Barefoot -I have a dream that one day, all across this nation, people will be able to go barefoot in public places without fear of ridicule and judgment. -I have a dream that one day, people who wear shoes will not look at people who don't wear shoes as disgusting or mentally cha...

You Can Go Barefoot!

Image
How to bribe a barefoot girl by Sharleen W.L. If you have read the story titled "Barefoot Sisters" you would know that in the beginning mom was so opposed to her kids going barefoot in public places, but she later gave in and allowed Tania and me to do so. The following took place in my early days of barefooting in public when I was in elementary school. It was 9:30pm on a Wednesday when dad was away on business. My oldest brother and sisters were still busy doing homework and studying, and my little brother was already in bed. I just got done with all my homework. I had karate class earlier in the evening, and so I took a shower when I got home. Btw, I got punished in class with doing lots of push-ups (I was joking around with another kid and wasn't paying attention to the instructor), so now I was a bit tired and sleepy. I was planning to go to bed a little earlier but wanted to kinda unwind first. So I decided to go to the media room and watch TV. Mom cam...

Barefoot Wonderland

by Tania WL Have you ever wished you lived in a really barefoot friendly world where going barefoot is widely accepted as a lifestyle choice, it's not looked down upon, and you see plenty of people going about their daily business in bare feet? Read the following story and see if together we can't create such a wonderful world for barefooters - a barefoot wonderland! ***** I wake up as the bright morning sun shines through my bedroom window. That's my natural alarm clock which wakes me up every morning at approximately the same time. I'm a freshman in college, and this is the last day of school before summer vacation. There's no more classes today, but I'll be going to campus to get the results of the final exams I just took. I know I'm getting all A's and B's, so there's nothing to worry about, but I'm still anxious to know how well I did. Besides, tomorrow I'll be leaving for the South Pacific with my boyfriend for an exciting va...

Barefoot in Restaurants

Image
Going barefoot in restaurants is one of the most exciting things in my barefoot life. It kinda defies one of the most popular social norms that when you enter a restaurant you have to look 'decent', and i love breaking norms and taboos :) but since i'm kinda shy, it took a while and some guts for me to break norms and this one is no exception. Once i did it though, it got easier the next time around. The first i went to barefoot was a fast food Asian restaurant (which you can find plenty in Hawaii). Fast food places are cool 'cos you don't have to be served and most of them are really laid back. Still, i decided to do it one small (bare) step at a time. The very first time i just ordered to go so that i wouldn't need to sit in there feeling vulnerable. So i placed my order at the counter and waited till they bring it out, and then i walked out. Hey, i can still claim that i went barefoot in a restaurant can't i? :) The next time i went back to the sa...
