Socks vs barefoot

Image
by sharleen wl does wearing just socks count as barefoot? i think most would agree the answer to that question is obvious. barefoot means just that - your feet are bare, i.e. they're not covered in any way. yet its quite surprising this question has come up more than once in the reddit barefoot sub (posted by different people). like wtf? so i replied with a similar question - does wearing just underwear count as naked? i mean your one step closer but not quite there yet. lol i believe this stems from the fact that many people aren't comfortable showing their bare feet. one of the posters even admitted to that. this in turn stems from the fact that many (especially in western countries with the exception of australia and new zealand perhaps) are conditioned to think that feet are like semi-private parts. it's improper/impolite to show them to others except in certain places like the beach or swimming pool. just like men being shirtless. so wearing just socks is like a steppi...

Barefoot weekend and Christmas shopping with Lynn

Image
by Tania WL There's something magical about slipping off your shoes and letting the earth connect with you. That's what I do everyday after work. But this past weekend was extra special: I wasn't doing it alone. I got to spend the entire weekend and go Christmas shopping barefoot with my little sister Sharleen (a.k.a. Lynn). Hi everyone, this is Tania, Lynn's big sister. I used to post on this blog back in the day, but since I started working I got pretty busy and decided to let Lynn take over. But she said I should write this post for old time's sake. So here I am. Unfortunately, I have to wear shoes to work. But in my office I usually take them off. Sometimes I even walk to the break room barefoot which is ok as long as my manager doesn't see me. One time I got caught, but luckily my manager and I get along quite well, so she just glared at me and my bare feet without saying a word. I giggled and was like, "Sorry, I was just getting a cup of coffee,"...

Barefoot in Asian culture

Image
by sharleen wl  so there have been like a number of discussions in the reddit barefoot sub about going barefoot and the asian culture. some of the popular questions have been like 'why don't you see very many asians go barefoot in public?' and 'what is it like to go barefoot in asia (or name a specific country)?' or 'i'm planning to go to (a specific asian country) and wanna know if i should go barefoot in public there.' as an asian girl i find this topic interesting. so lets talk about it a little. barefoot asian girl with filthy feet across many asian cultures, going barefoot is far more than a matter of comfort; it's a gesture rich with cultural meaning, spiritual symbolism, and centuries-old tradition.  going barefoot as a sign of respect   in countries like japan, korea, india, thailand, and much of southeast asia, removing one’s shoes before entering a home is a deeply ingrained custom. bare feet, or feet in socks or house slippers, are seen as...

Barefoot shopping at the mall with mom

Image
a barefoot girl's story going shopping with her strict religious mom by sharleen wl hi everyone, how's it going? this is a rather long post but a pretty fun story. so i want you to get comfortable. get your favorite drink, maybe play some soft music, be barefooted (if you aren't already), take off all your clo... oops,  i'm getting carried away. i mean, you don't have to do that. unless your like me of course, lol. anyway, relax and enjoy! my dad is away on a business trip and my mom is home alone. so yesterday she called me and asked if i would wanna go shopping at the mall with her today (saturday). i love shopping so i said sure. she knows that i'm a barefooter and has kinda accepted the fact, so going barefoot to the mall with her shouldn't be an issue. i wake up a little earlier this morning cuz i wanna eat breakfast before going shopping. need the extra energy. the temperature this morning is 61 F which is cold for hawaii. i slept with my windows clos...

Barefoot at the farmers market

Image
a carefree barefoot lifestyle in paradise hawaii by sharleen wl i wake up this morning as the sun shines through my bedroom window and i hear the birds chirping. its satrurday and i don't have to work. i've been wanting to go to our town's farmers market which i don't get to do very often and today seems like a perfect day. so i walk to the bathroom to quickly brush my teeth and wash my face. i don't even comb or brush my hair cuz hey, its the weekend and i kinda like the messy hair look. after putting on a pair of shorts, a crop top and my nerdy glasses i step out of my apartment. barefoot of course. yep, messy hair, nerdy glasses and bare feet. what a great combination lol. there's a lot of big trees in my apartment complex and alot of birds which i enjoy watching. with that many birds there's quite a bit of shit on the ground which i likely step on but i don't really care. its all part of being in nature and living the barefoot lifestyle. its a sunny...

Barefoot in the haunted woods at night

Image
by sharleen wl this is actually the last part of the barefoot staycation series. the title "barefoot in the haunted woods at night" refers to the woods behind my apartment complex where i spent most of the day barefoot the first day of my staycation but didn't want to be there after dark since it's rumored to be haunted. did i finally do it? you'll find out soon. but before we get started... just a little note about aiden the restaurant manager. he left the next morning (tuesday) at around 10:30 and went straight to the restaurant which opens at 11 am after having a fun night in my apartment ;). the following days were pretty much uneventful. nothing super interesting. i mean they were exciting as i got to go barefoot the entire time but i don't want to keep telling you similar things and bore you to tears lol. fast forward to saturday. i spent the whole day with my sister tania who came to visit me and we went shopping and had dinner together. of course she w...

Fun barefoot day around town

Image
barefoot staycation day 2 by sharleen wl it's monday morning, the second day of my barefoot staycation. rays of sunlight filters through my bedroom window and the birds are chirping outside. i stretch my arms and legs, feeling the cool breeze that comes in from the open window. ya, like many dwelling places in hawaii my apartment isn't air-conditioned. we don't need it that much cuz the trade wind blows almost constantly. occasionally it stops blowing and the air becomes sticky but that's only like a couple of weeks in a year. i look at my dirty soles and giggle as they're a sign of living a fun and free barefoot lifestyle. yesterday was quite enjoyable and today more exciting adventures await. but...there's something i need to do before i even start the day. last night i was too tired and this morning i feel a strong urge to do it. noo, i'm not talking about washing the dishes 🤣. hint - not wearing anything in bed really makes it easy 😉 ok no...

Barefoot staycation

Image
by sharleen wl i recently took a week's vacation. it was a staycation to be exact because well, i live in hawaii. people come here for vacation so why should i go anywhere else? lol. that meant it was going to be a full week being completely barefoot. as i previously mentioned, my current job as a cashier at a restaurant doesn't allow me to be barefoot at work. i can wear flip flops (or rubber slippers as they call them here) which is cool as i despise closed shoes but still, it ain't the same as being barefoot. if you've been following my blog for a while you know that i'm a rebellious barefoot girl who refuses to wear shoes no matter the weather or occasion. i just love the feeling of the earth beneath my feet and the freedom that comes with being shoeless. so a whole day spent in bare feet is always an adventure. it never gets old. i usually have sunday and monday off which i always look forward to and now i'll literally be barefoot 24/7. it'll be a magic...

You can't be in here barefoot!

by sharleen wl as many of you know hawaii is quite a barefoot friendly place especially the small towns where life is even more laid back than in big cities like honolulu. going barefoot in public is well tolerated for the most part and you'll likely see at least a barefooter or two out and about on any given day. i know its not as many as in new zealand or australia but still more than in most other places in the u.s. very rarely do you see the 'no shoes no service' sign that's abundant on the mainland. but like anything else there's exceptions. i have been kicked out of places of business for being barefoot. i've never written anything about it so far cuz i don't like to focus on the negative. but today i decided to write about my recent experience cuz its actually kinda 'interesting' and just to show you that its not always a bed of roses in paradise. its 11 o'clock sunday morning. i open my eyes to the bright sun shining through my bedroom wi...

Fun barefoot weekend with family

by sharleen wl so last weekend my family decided to get together at my parents' house. i was excited cuz although we live on the same island, i very seldom get to see everyone. i got off work a little early on friday like around 4 pm. as i got to my apartment i immediately changed into my favorite attire - a tank top and ripped jeans shorts and got ready to leave. there wasn't much to pack as i would be wearing the same clothes the whole weekend. so all i brought were toiletries, my phone and charger, and some stuff for my parents and siblings which i put in my backpack. i didn't even bring any footwear since i was going to be barefoot the entire time. dad had offered to pick me up but i decided to take the bus instead. it's actually more fun. seriously. i love riding the bus barefoot. i put on my new pair of nerdy glasses (ya, i started wearing glasses like a month ago) and walked to the bus stop. a nerdy look and bare feet are the bomb, lol. while i was sitting at the...

Still barefoot after all these years

by sharleen wl the following took place some time last year when we were still in lock down and our restaurant only served take out orders. as i previously told you i was working as a cashier and they let me work barefoot since there were no dine-in customers. that particular day was quite busy, and one of the servers didn't come in, so they were underhanded.  i offered to help by bringing the orders out to the customers who were waiting in their cars outside. at first my boss hesitated cos i was barefoot but finally let me do it since they could really use my help. it was around 6:30 pm and it was still a little light outside. one of the servers asked me if i could bring out an order to the car parked right in front. i said sure. i looked at the receipt and saw the name was david. so i walked out and saw there was only one person in the car (the driver). he was wearing a hat and a face mask. so i went to the driver's window which was open and said, "david? here's your...
